About…

The history of the mountain horse dates back to the early 19th century when the Appalachian families used them for working the fields, transporting families across the mountains, taking them to church, and safely taking their children to the swimming holes.  By 1986, they became the perfect trail horse.  They make great trail horses and show horses

The Mountain Horse is made up of 3 breeds: Rocky, Kentucky, and Mountain Pleasure. The three essentially possess the same traits: a smooth even four beat gait, temperament that is second to none, and the ability to maintain form and stamina while carrying their rider over long distances and rough terrain.

The true RMH has a solid body color, with very little facial markings, no white above the knee or hock.  While the chocolate with flaxen or white mane and tail is the signature color, they come in most colors.  They are of medium height (14.2 to 16 hands), with a visible appearance of strength and stamina (wide chest, bold eyes, well defined bone structure).

Goals…

I searched for a name that would explain the philosophy and goals of our kennel and now our horse farm. We came up with the name Keystone: "something on which associated things depend for support". We want to support the breed by enhancing temperament, gait and trainability. Our slogan, "Mountain Horses of Eminence", indicates our dedication and desire to achieve the qualities of superiority and prominence while continuing to strive for the perfect mountain horse. We have researched many breeders to find top quality horses to be our foundation.  We chose Van Bert Farms and are very proud of them. We have continued our knowledge seeking with many breeders and owners and are learning more every day!

Temperament is one of the mountain horse’s greatest assets.  They are sometimes referred to as having a puppy dog temperament.  This is important to us.

Their gait is what distinguishes them from other breeds.  Having a natural gait enhances their abilities to give that smooth ride and be very elegant in the show ring.

Trainability refers to their ability to be taught. They are an intelligent animal with lots of energy and a desire to please. Through selective breeding we strive to keep this drive. One of the keys to training is that each family member must be consistent. Another is patience and proven training techniques.
